BACKGROUND

Few years down the line in 2009, GYAC was established in an effort of the World Bank Institute to tackle corruption stressed that young citizen can be powerful agents for change and innovation when they find a space where they can voice their views, develop leadership capacity, and interact creatively.

 

The Global Youth Anti-Corruption Network is a global network of civil society youth-led organizations working to improve transparency and social accountability for better governance.

 

The network currently has 43 country chapters and over 1400 active members on its platform.

 

The Liberia Chapter of GYAC (GYAC-Liberia) is an alliance of civil society youth led organizations mobilizing young people to join the fight against corruption locally. It comprises of student activists, youth advocates, young journalists and other pressure groups.

Youths in Liberia Celebrate International Anti-Corruption Day 2013

The program brought together over 100 participants from various sectors of the society including national integrity institutions, non-governmental organizations, youth groups, students and other stakeholders.

 

The program was held at the Muslim Congress High School in Monrovia on May 30 2014.  The event was self-sponsored by GYAC-Liberia from member’s contributions.

 

The 2nd Edition of the Voices Against Corruption Forum a program aimed at fostering actions for integrity within the Liberian society by promoting (a) open discussion on integrity and anti-corruption issues, (b) disseminating information on what individuals and groups of individuals can do to curb corruption and also seeks to make space for concerned and marginalized groups especially youths to voice their opinion and put forward solutions.

participate in the 2013 Anglophone West Africa  Youth Integrity Camp in Lagos, Nigeria September 23-27, 2013.

 

The Camp was organized by the Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of Nigeria in partnership with Transparency International with funding from UNDP Regional offices for West Africa
 

GYAC-LIBERIA HOLDS VOICES AGAINST CORRUPTION FORUM 2ND EDITION

 

The Liberian Chapter of the Global Youth Anti-Corruption Network an international anti-corruption and integrity institution established by the World Bank Institute in 2009, has made the latest call for the immediate dismissal and subsequent prosecution of Madam Varbah Glayflor Director of Cabinet, Republic of Liberia for corruption while serving as Minister of  Gender & Development.

 

According to the international anti-corruption youth group the recent recommendation by the Public Account Committee of the National Legislature calling for the former Gender Minister to restitute funds misappropriated and unaccounted for while serving as Minister of Gender & Development is welcome but believe that corruption increases if corrupt practices are not punish and the prosecution of Madam Varbah Glayflor is vital to the professed war against corruption.

 

Speaking in Monrovia recently, GYAC-Liberia National Coordinator, James Koryor stated that the current situation in the country is sadden, regrettable and worrisome stating that the recent global human development report ranking Liberia amongst the poorest nation on the planet evidently justified the Transparency International 2013 corruption perception report .

 

Mr. James Koryor furthered stressed that the problem in Liberia is not about framework or policies to combat corruption, but rather the lack of integrity, nationalism and sincerity by those who manages the wealth of the country.

 

The youth advocate also asserted that the challenge for government is to meet this demand and regain trust in their management of the public good. And transparency is essential to maintaining public trust in the government and public service.

 

The youth advocate furthered stressed that with millions of dollars been   spent by the United States, European Union and other friendly countries to   improves the living conditions of poverty stricken Liberians, but the government   has failed to properly managed these donor funded initiatives least to say   that millions have be wasted on local development projects with not   even 30% of all projects under the County Development Fund manage by the   Ministry of Internal Affairs and local government officials being fully realized.

 

 

GYAC-Liberia, LEITI Holds Natural Resource Governance Forum on 2014 International       Anti-Corruption Day 

Over 100 National Youth and Student leaders in Liberia have join millions of advocates, anti-corruption fighters and integrity institutions around the world to celebrate the 2013 International Anti-Corruption Day.

 

By resolution 58/4 of October 31, 2003, the UN General Assembly designated December 9 as International Anti-Corruption Day. This decision aimed to raise people’s awareness of corruption and of the role of the United Nations Convention against Corruption in combating and preventing it.

 

Youth Integrity Ambassadors in Liberia in collaboration with the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission, National Integrity Forum and Civil Society Organizations organized a one day Youth Integrity Forum aimed at strengthening youth participation in the fight against corruption in Liberia. The event was sponsored by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Over one hundred youths and students in Liberia have join millions of activists, anti-corruption and integrity institutions around the world to observe this year International Anti-Corruption Day.

 

By resolution 58/4 of October 31, 2003, the UN General Assembly designated December 9 as International Anti-Corruption Day. This decision aimed to raise people’s awareness of corruption and of the role of the United Nations Convention against Corruption in combating and preventing it.

 

The assembly urged all states and competent regional economic integration organizations to sign and ratify the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) to ensure its rapid entry into force.

 

In commemoration of the day in Liberia, the Global Youth Anti-Corruption Network Liberia Chapter (GYAC-Liberia) in partnership with the Liberia Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (LEITI) with funding support from GIZ organized the Liberia Youth Natural Resource Governance Forum a one day roundtable highlighting LEITI 5TH Report as well as looking at Sustainable Management of Revenue flows and environmental impact.

 

Speaking at the event the National Coordinator of GYAC-Liberia, James Koryor stated that the event was intended to equip, engage and educate youths on natural resource governance issues. Mr. Koryor also commended LEITI and GIZ for providing a platform where youths and students could engage with stakeholders to better understand the management of Liberia Extractive Industries, revenue flows, environmental impact as well as current laws and policies governing the sector with a focus on transparency in Natural Resource Governance.

 

For his part, the LEITI Senior Sector Analyst Mr. Saynneh M. Dickson who represented Mr. Konah D. Karmo Head of Secretariat LEITI stressed that since the end of its civil wars, Liberia has made considerable governance gains in the natural resources sector. In 2009, the government passed the landmark Liberian Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (LEITI) Law, requiring natural resource revenue and contract transparency.

 

Mr. Dixon further stated that LEITI has so far published five EITI Reports on Liberia beginning 2007/2008, 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011, and 2011/2012 respectively. The LEITI executive also asserted that reports published by LEITI are independently verified by national and international auditing firm.

 

 

GYAC-Liberia Celebrates International Youth Day 2013

 

 

The 1st Edition of the Voices against Corruption Forum organized and hosted by the Global Youth Anti-Corruption Network Liberia Chapter (GYAC-Liberia) was in commemoration for the 2013 international Youth Day.

 

The International Youth Day was established in 2000 by the United Nations a day set aside to highlight and recognize the contribution of youth across the globe.

 

In commemoration of the 2013 International Youth Day in Liberia, GYAC-Liberia join thousands of youths, youth-led organizations and civil society organizations across the globe to celebrate the day by organizing the 1st Edition of the Voices against Corruption Forum a program aimed at creating awareness and to foster actions for integrity within the Liberian Public sector by promoting (a) open discussion on the related issues, (b) disseminating information on what individuals and groups of individuals can do to curb corruption.
