.The Liberia Chapter of the Global Youth Anti-Corruption Network an international anti-corruption and integrity institution established by the World Bank Institute in 2009, has commended the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission for what it calls the latest action against the former Board Chairman of the National Oil Company of Liberia Mr. Clemenceau Urey.
It can be recalled few weeks back that Mr. Urey was invited by the Public Accounts Committee of the National Legislature to provide explanation on some of his actions at NOCAL where he formerly served as Board Chairman. Mr. Urey admitted to bribing Lawmakers to pass contract in favor of NOCAL which has drawn the attention of the public and instigating an investigation by the LACC on the matter.
Mr. Koryor furthered stated that the recent press conference held by Mr. Urey where he stated of alleged assault by agents of the LACC was intended to misinform the public and divert their attention from the real issue that have to do with his involvement in corruption. According to GYAC-Liberia National Coordinator James Koryor, the recent action of the LACC to enforce the law was in the right direction and a great step in the fight against corruption and should be applauded by all well-meaning Liberians.
The youth leader also stressed that the open admittance to bribery by Mr. Urey is not only self denigrating, but has also brought the entire 52nd National Legislature to public disrepute and needs a thorough investigation and a callous penalty be recommended for anyone found liable of wrong doing. The youth advocate is at the same time calling on Mr. Urey to desist from engaging into media war or engaging the services of public relations CSOs to get public sympathy cause not amount of misleading or so-called advocacy can help him.
According to the international anti-corruption youth group, what we saw in Tunis and Cairo were extremes. But this demonstrated the very real threat faced by governments who do not stop corruption. When people are denied their basic rights, where petty bribery is allowed to flourish and where those in power act with impunity, citizens will protest.
The GYAC-Liberia coordinator furthered stated that the current situation in the country is deplorable and irritating stating that the recent global human development report ranking Liberia amongst the poorest nation on the planet evidently justified the Transparency International 2013 corruption perception report that ranked Liberia as the second most corrupt nation in the world. Mr. Koryor is at the same time calling for the establishment of Criminal Court F as stated by the President, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in her January 2014 Annual Message and the urgent resubmission of the LACC Act to the National Legislature for amendments to enable a holistic prosecution of who be corrupt persons by the LACC.
